Why zDrafts?
I vibe coded a WYSIWYG editor for Zola static site generator, that has helped me tremendously while writing this and many other posts.
You see I have a problem - major part of my waking hours is me not having access to my laptop.
On the other side, I own a phone that pretty much stays with me 24/7 - no I am not always on it, even though that may have made me look like a phone-addict right now.
The point being, a markdown based static site generator, that requires you to write content on a text editor on a computer is... not a very good way for someone trying to maintain consistency.
One may argue, this gives you a good separation of concerns - blog only when you are fully committed to write one. Which I agree would help me put out a more well thought-out content.
That’s simply not what I am going for.
I just want to get my thoughts out!
I want this to become like twitter to me - got a cool idea?
- Jot it down real quick, with formatting being part of writing.
- Publish it to the world!
Just 2 simple steps instead of,
- Write to a notes app on phone.
- Check if it synced to my laptop (once I have access to one)
- Copy content over to a markdown, and make any formatting changes.
- Publish and hope, things still look as I intended them to.
Also, realistically speaking, as a grown man with a family - I only have so much time I can spend on my personal endeavours. And using every little free time counts.
So, making a quick post like this on my lunch break, commute, or simply being able to do it whenever and wherever I want is a huge plus.
Honestly speaking, there are a ton of other ways I could have done it,
- Medium, Dev.to, Wordpress, <insert your favourite CMS here> - No because, I did not want a ecosystem lock-in!
- bearblog, mataroa, neocities - a solid alternative, but i love to host it myself.
- Twitter (X), Facebook, LinkedIn - nah, nope, never... I’m not giving up my freedom for an audience.
This turned out more of a rant than an explainer of what zdrafts actually is. Well that’s a topic for another day.
